Filling the quiet season

February for boarding, January for grooming, August for trainers. Everyone has one. What partners actually do with it.

The instinct in a quiet month is to discount. It is usually the worst available option, because it trains your existing customers to wait for the discount and does nothing to reach anyone new. Three things work better, in roughly this order.

Sell the slot, not the price

A midweek eleven o'clock has almost no value to somebody who works Monday to Friday, and considerable value to a retired owner, a shift worker or somebody at home with a new puppy. Those people exist within a mile of you and they are not on your books.

Listing off-peak availability separately, at the same price, reaches them. Around three quarters of off-peak bookings taken through Petsocare go to customers the partner had never served before. That is new demand, not shuffled demand.

Sell time in blocks

A ten-day daycare pack, a five-session training block, a six-groom year. Blocks are paid up front, which turns your quietest month into working capital, and they commit the customer to coming back rather than drifting to whoever is nearest next time.

Price a block at a genuine but modest saving. Twenty percent off destroys the margin you were protecting; five to eight percent is enough, because the real appeal is not the discount but having the decision already made.

Use the gap to win back lapsed customers

Every business has a list of people who came twice and then stopped. They did not leave angry; they got busy. A quiet month is exactly when you have the capacity to take them back, and a win-back message costs nothing to send.

Recovering a lapsed customer is consistently cheaper than acquiring a new one, and in a quiet month it is also the only marketing you can fulfil at full capacity.

A discount fills February once. A midweek customer fills it every year.

One caution. Do not fill a quiet month so thoroughly that you have no room to breathe in it. The businesses that survive longest treat their slow weeks as maintenance time as well as sales time: the deep clean, the equipment service, the holiday you keep postponing.

It is the best time to join: you have room to learn how the orders land before the rush, and listing costs nothing either way.
